Sometimes we find ourselves gaining weight for what seems to be no apparent reason. You join a gym or start to train for a marathon but still you aren’t losing the weight; it’s a mystery. Well, have no fear because hopefully this article is going to cover some of the more surprising reasons for weight gain.
Lack of sleep
A common reason for weight gain amongst people who live an otherwise healthy life is a lack of sleep. The body requires rest in order to properly carry out its functions, if it isn’t given the opportunity to do this then it will store fat. Not only will a lack of sleep have an adverse effect on bodily functions it is also likely to lead to an increase in the consumption of sugary sweets and snacks in an attempt to wake us up.
The modern adult spends the majority of their waking hours cooped up in an office in front of a computer. Not only is the lack of exercise damaging in this scenario but the amount of stress we are under has been shown to cause weight gain. It is commonly thought that stress leads to weight loss but research has shown the opposite to be true.
Given up Smoking
It is a well-known fact that smoking leads to weight loss, so it should come as no surprise that once you quit the weight piles back on again. If you have recently kicked the habit then you should expect to gain at least a bit of weight; but that’s nothing compared to the damage you were doing with the cigarettes.
Replacing Fat with Simple Carbs
When people go on diets nine times out of ten the first thing to go is fatty foods; and to a certain extent that is the right thing to do. However, the reason that people often find themselves still gaining weight despite this is because they have simply replaced those fatty foods with simple carbohydrates. Simple carbs are found in things like white bread, pasta and white rice; if possible replace these with complex carbs such as wholegrain foods, brown bread and oats.
